Starbucks Review

The Dawg Dish Staff sat down at Starbucks last week for their weekly meeting. Feeling inspired by the sweet smell of coffee and drinks, they decided to each try a drink they had never had. Here are some of the opinions from our staff….

Quinn:

Black Coffee: In a pinch, this will do. Starbucks, being a “coffee” shop, should at least in my opinion have really good coffee…straight up. Unfortunately, it’s mediocre at best. I have to doctor up my coffee with a great deal of vanilla in order to make it more palatable. Normally, I would complain about any coffee– hell, I drink what they have in Atherton, but Starbucks is ridiculously priced. One is better off going to a local gas station and getting their coffee of the day. However, if you’re on campus, and your only option is Starbucks, get the Blonde roast if you are lucky to go in at a time that they actually have some brewed.Image result for starbucks coffee

Cole:

Strawberries and Creme frappuccino: This is just like a strawberry milkshake. Starbucks advertises this drink as one of it’s best summertime sellers but in my opinion, I think it is a little heavy for a sweltering summer day; I would much rather something that would quench my thirst. It isn’t quite as thick as your typical Steak N Shake milkshake, but it has that same fruity, creamy taste. You can replace the 2% milk with the skim which will reduce some of the fat, but the sugar load comes in at 54 grams for a grande which essentially makes up for the lack of caffeine. Overall: a good drink every once in a while, probably if needed to fulfill a craving for a milkshake.

Cole:

Iced Passion Tea Lemonade: This is definitely a summertime favorite. Upon tasting it, my immediate description would be tangy, sweet, and tart with a citrus after-taste that is quite pleasant. Though if you aren’t into fruity drinks, this may not be your cup of tea. Pun intended. Here are the absolute need-to-knows about this drink.

1) It is quite healthy among the other Starbucks drinks. For a size grande, it has only 120 calories, no fat, no sodium.

2)Be sure to ask for light ice if you want the most bang for your buck. Otherwise, you’ll take two gulps and it’ll be gone.

3) It is a grab and go drink. With little brewing and not many extra additives, this drink can be whipped up rather quickly.

4) There is no caffeine. So if you need a pick-me-up for an early class, this may not be for you.

Joe:

Hazelnut Iced Coffee: I tried making ice coffee at home, and it is just not worth it. You need to start with cold coffee, which takes quite a long time considering that coffee is, upon brewing, naturally a very hot beverage. Pouring hot coffee over ice basically just leads to luke-warm, ice-down gross coffee. Fortunately, the fine folks at Starbucks always have a cold pitcher of coffee waiting. It sits there, like a sniper ready to attack my taste buds with caffeine and delight. But if you have ever had an iced coffee by itself, be prepared for a foul taste. Ask the barrista to add some milk (whatever your variety of choice-I am a skim person myself), and a shot of your favorite flavor (hazelnut or toffee nut FTW), and you have a delicious treat waiting for ingestion.

Brendon:

Caramel Flan frappuccino: The caramel flan frappuccino packs all the punch of a classy after dinner treat in a portable cup. It is delicious, smooth and easy to devour in a few minutes. I’m not a huge coffee drinker, but after slurping down this drink, I was ready for another. In the end, the Starbucks frappacino (especially the caramel flan) is just an excuse to have dessert in the middle of the day, and I am completely okay with that.

Allie:

Toffee Nut Coffee/Iced Coffee: The great thing about this drink is that is is good hot or cold! I stumbled upon this toffee nut flavoring by accident one day when I told the Starbucks barista that I wanted to try a new flavoring, because I typically ordered hazelnut. I told him I liked my coffee to be really sweet and he told me that this would be the perfect flavoring for me, and boy was he right! The Toffee Nut flavoring makes the coffee taste so sweet and doesn’t have an artificial flavor, which makes me like it even more. It is a really easy drink to order, it doesn’t require you to prepare a full on speech before ordering and has a relatively quick turn around time because it is such a simple drink for them to make. No matter what time of day this drink always quenches my thirst. Because this drink is nothing special it is also on the healthier side, it is only 110 calories (that is before you add any additional sugar). Overall, I would recommend this drink to any and all who may want to try a new and delicious flavor to a rather boring and traditional drink.
